“He so very nearly made it” is the Daily Mirror’s headline, reporting that Mr Mosley’s body was discovered near a bar on the Greek island of Symi. The paper reports authorities think the 67-year-old may have fallen or collapsed in the 40C heat.
The Daily Mail also notes that Mr Mosley came “tantalisingly close” to reaching safety, after his body was found just 80 yards (73m) from a beach resort. It also highlights Claire Bailey Mosley saying she was “taking comfort” in that her “brilliant” husband “so very nearly made it”.
The Daily Express features a picture of the couple together, highlighting that Mrs Bailey Mosley said her husband had completed an “incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed” in a place where the search team could not see him.
The Guardian leads with President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the French Parliament and call snap elections, after a huge defeat to his rival Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in the European elections. Reliable European election projections showed his centrist grouping was on course to get 14.8-15.2% of the vote, whereas Le Pen’s was on course for 31.5-33%, the paper reports.
The Daily Telegraph’s report describes Mr Macron as having been “trounced” by his rivals, prompting a “shock address to the nation” to call the snap elections and say the hard right was “progressing everywhere” in Europe. The paper also reports on a similar defeat for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose Social Democrats saw their “worst-ever result” at EU elections.
