Another day of violence dominates most of Monday’s front pages after tensions worsened across parts of England and Northern Ireland following the killings of three young girls in Southport. “Under siege” is the Daily Mirror’s splash headline which also carries an image from the viewpoint of police officers who were dealing with the violent clashes in cities and towns including Tamworth, Middlesbrough and Rotherham.
“Shame on you” reads the Metro’s headline with an image of a man in a Union Jack mask. Metro’s front page report focuses on a particular group who launched lengths of wood and sprayed fire extinguishers at officers outside a Holiday Inn Express.
Next to an image of protesters clashing with police in South Yorkshire, Sir Keir Starmer’s response to the latest unrest makes the headline of Monday’s Financial Times. The prime minister is quoted in the paper’s lead insisting those involved would regret taking part – adding they should be in no doubt they would face the full force of the law.
The Daily Mail leads on photos of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, who is pictured at a five-star holiday resort on the outskirts of Ayia Napa, Cyprus. The paper accuses him of “stoking riots from his sunbed” citing what it describes as “inflammatory online posts”. It comes a week on from an arrest warrant being issued by a judge for the far-right activist after he left the country.
A photo of masked anti-immigration demonstrators smashing several windows at a hotel in Rotherham makes the front page of the i newspaper. In other news, at the top of the paper is an image of Boxer Cindy Ngamba after she made history by guaranteeing the Refugee Olympic Team a first Games medal.
Scenes from riots also feature on the front of the Guardian which carries Starmer’s warning those involved will regret their actions. An image of US star sprinter Noah Lyles also features on the front after he won the men’s 100m by crossing the finish line just 0.005 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson.
Disorder shows no sign of abating as rioters take to the streets in Bolton, Middlesbrough and Rotherham, the Daily Telegraph reports . In other news, the paper includes a story reporting Royal Navy ships and RAF helicopters were on standby in the Middle East on Sunday night over fears of a regional war. It comes after the Foreign Office said families of embassy staff in Beirut, Lebanon, had been withdrawn for their safety.
Writing in the Times, Yvette Cooper says there will be a “reckoning for the individuals who took part in the violence” and she also is targeting those who “whip up” and amplify the violent scenes online and social media platforms. The paper reports more than 420 people have been arrested since last Monday. The home secretary has vowed to give police and law enforcement all the resources they need.
An image of a chair being thrown in Rotherham towards flames dominates the front of the Daily Express. The paper details the picture across the country but its main focus is on the scenes in South Yorkshire after those involved “stormed” a migrant hotel. There is a comment from Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey who says those involved have “disgraced themselves”.
